Yes, Senso-ji temple is probably one of Tokyo’s most popular tourist sites, but the area around the temple with it’s busy side streets, kimono shops and traditional eateries gives off a special kind of Edo-vibe which is rare to find in modern-day Tokyo. While the street lined with souvenir shops leading up to the temple might seem tempting, we recommend veering off into the slightly quieter side streets and exploring the area from there. Be sure to grab one of the many street snacks while you are on the go and check out some of the kimono stores which sell beautiful new and used examples of the traditional Japanese garment.
Tip: Before you enter the temple area visit the free rooftop terrace of the Asakusa Tourist Information Center which has the best view over Asakusa and was designed by Japan’s legendary architect Kengo Kuma.
